Massimiliano Mechelli believes in experimentation and strives to create unique sonic worlds for each project he works on, ensuring that every piece is as distinctive as the work it accompanies.
Massimiliano’s musical journey began in Rome at the renowned Scuola Popolare di Musica di Testaccio, where he explored various musical genres through guitar and vocal studies.
At the age of nineteen, he moved to London to pursue a degree in Popular Music, Guitar Performance at The ICMP.
In London, Massimiliano formed the band Corners of the Earth, serving as frontman. The band released a self-titled EP and performed at well-known venues such as Hootananny and Barfly, as well as at festivals like Leefest, which has featured artists like Bastille and MØ.
During his second year at ICMP, he developed a passion for film scoring under the mentorship of Emmy-nominated composer Maurizio Malagnini (Call the Midwife, The Paradise). This new interest merged his love of music with his passion for cinema.
In 2016, after graduating, he won a scholarship to pursue a Master’s in Scoring for Film, TV, and Video Games at the prestigious Berklee College of Music.
Upon returning to Rome, Massimiliano embarked on his career as a film composer, contributing to the new wave of Italian horror cinema.
His first film score was for In the Trap by Alessio Liguori, produced by the iconic Cinevox label.
In 2020, he composed the soundtrack for The Binding (Il Legame) by Domenico De Feudis, starring Riccardo Scamarcio and Mía Maestro, produced by Indigo Film and HT Film in collaboration with Netflix.
In 2021, he scored A Classic Horror Story by Roberto De Feo and Paolo Strippoli, starring Matilda Lutz. The film, produced by Netflix and Colorado, became the most-watched Italian film worldwide on Netflix and won the Silver Cariddi at the Taormina Film Festival.
Thanks to A Classic Horror Story, Massimiliano was nominated for Best Original Score at the 2022 Musicomics Awards, sponsored by SIAE and IMAIE.
In 2022, he composed the score for Nostos, a short film directed by Mauro Zingarelli and starring Aurora Giovinazzo and Francesco Foti, which was nominated for Best Short Film at the Venice International Critics’ Week.
That same year, he composed the music for a Vibram commercial directed by Enea Colombi, which received Vimeo’s prestigious Staff Pick.
Also in 2022, Massimiliano scored the internationally acclaimed Netflix series The Law According to Lidia Poët, directed by Matteo Rovere and Letizia Lamartire, starring Matilda De Angelis. The series became the most-watched Italian production in Netflix history and one of the most-watched non-English language series in Europe. It went on to win the Nastro d’Argento for Best Crime Series in 2023.
In 2024, he scored La Coda del Diavolo (The Net), set to premiere on Sky, and the second season of The Law According to Lidia Poët, which will be showcased on October 24th at Alice nella Città during the Rome Film Festival as part of the “Great Series” section.
